Review AI duplicate suggestions

How Quackback uses AI to find duplicate posts, where to review merge suggestions, and how to merge, dismiss, or undo a merge.

Quackback can spot duplicate feedback for you. When AI is configured, it compares posts, confirms likely duplicates, and suggests merges that you accept or dismiss with one click. This article explains how duplicate suggestions are found and where to review them.

How duplicates are found

When a post is created, and periodically for posts that haven't been checked recently, Quackback:

  1. searches for similar existing posts using both meaning (vector embeddings) and keywords (full-text search)
  2. asks the AI model to verify which candidates are true duplicates, and which post should be kept
  3. creates a merge suggestion for each confirmed pair, with the AI's reasoning

Note: Duplicate suggestions need AI to be configured for your workspace. On a self-hosted install, that means an AI endpoint plus embedding and chat models. Without them, no suggestions are created, and you can still merge posts by hand.

Where to review suggestions

In the feedback list

When suggestions are waiting, a duplicates count appears above the list in Feedback. Click it to show only posts that have pending duplicate suggestions, then Clear to return to the full list. You can also add the Has duplicates filter from the Filter button.

On a post

Open a post to see the Similar posts card. Each suggestion shows the other post's title, votes, and status, along with the AI's reasoning for why they match.

For each suggestion you can:

  • Merge: choose the direction first. Merge into this keeps the post you're viewing and folds the other one into it. Merge into that folds the post you're viewing into the other one.
  • Dismiss: reject the suggestion.

What happens when you merge

Merging works the same whether it came from a suggestion or you did it by hand:

  • the duplicate shows a banner linking to the main post
  • votes are combined, counting each voter once
  • the main post lists the duplicate under Merged Feedback
  • the activity timeline records the merge on both posts

You can reverse a merge at any time: open the main post, find the duplicate under Merged Feedback, and click Unmerge.

Merge without a suggestion

You don't have to wait for AI. Open a post, click Manage, then Merge, and choose Merge into another... or Merge into this to search for the other post yourself. The search ranks results as a strong, good, or possible match. See Triage feedback in the inbox.

Work with suggestions from tools and agents

Merge suggestions are also available through the REST API and the MCP server, so an AI agent or script can accept, dismiss, or restore them. See API overview and MCP Server.

Tip: Merge duplicates early. Combined votes give you a truer picture of demand.
