Categories group related articles so visitors can browse by topic from your help center homepage. This article explains how to create, nest, hide and order categories.

What a category has

  • Name: shown as the card title. Required.
  • Description: optional, shown under the name.
  • Icon: picked from a searchable icon set.
  • Parent category: leave it as No parent (top-level), or pick a parent to make a sub-category.
  • Public: whether the category and its articles are visible on your public help center.
  • Restrict to segments (optional): limit a public category and its articles to signed-in members of selected segments. Leave it empty to show it to everyone.
  • Translations: the category name and description in each extra language you've added.

Create a category

  1. Go to Admin > Help Center.
  2. In the sidebar, under Categories, click New category. To add a sub-category, use New sub-category on the parent's row.
  3. Enter a name and, optionally, a description and icon.
  4. Turn on Public when you want visitors to see it.
  5. Save.

Tip: Start with 3 to 5 categories, such as Getting Started, Features, Billing and Troubleshooting. Split them later as your content grows. Organize around how your customers think about your product, not how your team built it.

Edit or delete a category

Hover over a category row in the sidebar to show Edit category and Delete category.

Deleting a category also deletes its sub-categories and their articles. Restore them from Deleted items (under Other in the sidebar) within 30 days.

Order categories

Categories appear in order of their position, then alphabetically. The admin sidebar doesn't support dragging to reorder. To set a specific order, update each category's position through the REST API (PATCH /api/v1/help-center/categories/{id}). See the API overview.
